Albert Glinsky's Rhapsody for Solo Violin, Flute, Strings and Timpani is a showpiece for violin, highlighting both the virtuosic and melodic aspects of the instrument. The flute and timpani provide timbral variety within the overall string sonority. The primary musical influences in the piece derive from folk rock and other popular musics. These are integrated into the gestures and formal structure of a classical sonata form scheme, and represent one of the composer's earliest attempts at this synthesis-a technique which has since become the trademark of his musical language. The Rhapsody was also used as the score for the Joffrey II ballet Flights, choreographed by Leslie-Jane Pessemier. The work was used on tour with the company in over 150 performances in the U.S. and abroad.
